The June 2013 issue of Essence magazine cover is graced by media mogul Oprah Winfrey and Tyler Perry.  Perry joined Winfrey’s network, OWN, to bring his TV shows over to the network and also will include new shows.

In the struggling phase of OWN, Winfrey recalls, “I was talking to [Tyler] one morning, feeling so overwhelmed I said, ‘I don’t know what I’m going to do.’ He said, ‘Let me pray with you.’ He’s so good at praying that I call him Moses. He started praying and we continued having conversations, and he said, ‘I think I can help you.’ That’s when we started talking about working together. The truth is that he told me I didn’t have anything fun and sexy on my station. ‘Where are the sexy people? Where’s the fun?’ he said. ‘You’re so serious.’ That’s how all of this really started. I wanted to get my fun and sexy on.”

So Perry is going to bring sexy to OWN?  Oh okay. He kinda brought sexy to Alex Cross.  Okay maybe not.

Jason Collins becomes the first active major sports athlete to come out as gay.  Collins covers the Sports Illustrated May 6th issue released today.

“I didn’t set out to be the first openly gay athlete playing in a major American team sport. But since I am, I’m happy to start the conversation,” Collins writes.

“I wish I wasn’t the kid in the classroom raising his hand and saying, ‘I’m different,’” he wrote. “If I had my way, someone else would have already done this. Nobody has, which is why I’m raising my hand.”

NBA Legend Michael Jordan married former model Yvette Prieto Saturday in Palm Beach Florida with a  group of 300-500 family and friends in attendance.

The ceremony was followed by a reception at the Bear’s Club in Jupiter, Fla., a luxurious private golf club designed by Jack Nicklaus. Jordan, 50, owns a home near the course.

There were fireworks at night as part of the celebration.

In lieu of wedding gifts, donations were made to the James R. Jordan Foundation. The wedding flowers were donated to the Jupiter Medical Center. Source

The two Los Angeles women injured in the hunt for Christopher Dorner receive $2.1M each in a settlement.

Margie Carranza, 47, and her mother, Emma Hernandez, 71 were both shot when police officers mistook their pickup truck for the vehicle that they thought Dorner was in.

The settlement was remarkably speedy compared with other LAPD civil lawsuits,  which have taken years to be resolved. City Atty. Carmen Trutanich was blunt  Tuesday in saying the city wanted to get the case, which has been a sore spot  for the Police Department, behind it as quickly as possible.  Source

R&B artist Tony Terry released the video for his single, ‘All I Need’ on Twitter earlier today.   Terry is a master of love songs which is evident in his body of work which includes the timeless ‘With You’ and ‘Everlasting Love’.   I just love some good ole R&B.
