Kansas City Chiefs linebacker, Jovan Belcher,  shot and killed a woman early Saturday morning at home.  He then drove to the team’s facility and shot himself in front of his coach and general manager according to the Kansas City Police Department.  The woman was not named.  However, sources identified her as his girlfriend and mother of their 3 month old child.

Belcher, an undrafted player out of Maine and native of West Babylon, N.Y., on Long Island, had started 44 of 59 games in his four seasons for the Chiefs, recording a career-high 61 tackles in 2011.

“We can confirm that there was an incident at Arrowhead earlier this morning,” the Chiefs said in a statement. “We are cooperating with authorities in their investigation.”

“There is nothing profound or comforting to say that can help us understand or explain a situation like this,” tweeted NFL Players Association assistant executive George Atallah.
