“It is important for me to go ahead and affirm that I think same-sex couples should be able to get married,” Obama said in an interview with ABC’s Robin Roberts.

Obama’s comments marked the first time a U.S. president had publicly expressed support for gay marriage, and his position was hailed by Democrats, gay rights groups and others as a benchmark for civil rights in the United States.

This hot button topic has been a concern for Obama supporters for some time.   It’s been reported that in the minutes after the endorsement, Obama receive near $1M in online donations.

What will be the outcome when it comes to the election in November?   It may lead independent voters against same-sex marriage to vote for Mitt Romney.  It can also lead to an overwhelming turnout for supporters of same-sex unions.  No one really knows.
